Gabby sat at the table playing with her breakfast; she had no appetite for it.

“Regretting last night?” Greg asked lightly.

Gabby shook her head, looked up, smiled, and took his hand. “No way. You are the tops. I am just trying to get my head around where we go from here. It’s as if I’ve found myself in the middle of a cryptic crossword and whichever way I look at it I can’t see the answer.”

Greg squeezed her hand. He wanted to protect her, but right at that moment he didn’t know how he could do so. “I know exactly what you mean. I spent half of the night going round the houses and getting nowhere. The one thing I do know is that you need to get away from him. I meant it when I said he is a dangerous man. I know what he is capable of and it scares the pants off me to think what he might do if ever he found out that you knew anything about his past.”

“That makes me feel so much better.” Gabby laughed.

“I meant what I said last night. This is your home any time you want it to be. You could go back right now, pack your bags and move in with me – a fresh start, forget the past.”

“Don’t tempt me, Satan.”

“Only it wouldn’t be that simple. If I know Harry Trumper he would be on your trail in no time. I can’t see him just shrugging his shoulders when he finds you’ve just upped and left while he has been sunning himself in Dubai. He’d want to know why, and through his network, he’d track you down. And what would he find? You shacked up with his old mate, Greg, who threatened to spill the beans on Magnolia. And then he’d know for sure that he’d been rumbled. Neither of us would be safe then,” Greg said soberly.

“So what do you suggest, Sherlock?” Gabby asked hopefully.

“The only sensible thing to do would be to go straight to the police and tell them everything we know. It may be our only option and they may still be looking for him. We’ve probably got enough on him to get him locked up for a few years –identity theft, fraud, maybe even bigamy. The only problem then is that with good behaviour he’d be out in a few years with a clean slate and hell-bent on revenge. I would not like to be around then.”

“And if we did go the police what would be the chances of the residents getting back the money that he owes them?” Gabby asked, half knowing the answer.

“There are no guarantees when it comes to the law, Gabby. This is one glorified mess, and by the time the police and courts manage to untangle it, if ever they do, it could be years. Sod’s law is that the residents will all be dead by then. And then, of course, there’s the added complication of Annabel having all of the money – whether lawful or not.
